This online version is developed as an easy to use eGFR calculator embedded into a web page. This application is easily accessible even through a low speed/bandwidth internet connection and can be used in a PC with less processing capabilities. Calculation is done in the client side, therefore has a fast response time. Use of the UK standard units; µmol/L for the serum Creatinine is promoted, however in situations where this is not possible facilities are available to accept the values in mg/dL. Even in such situation the value will get converted to the UK units and will be displayed in the interface. Invalid entries relating to out of range values and non-numeric values are captured and appropriate error messages are given with specific details.

1.0 Application requirements

  1. A web browser to view the online eGFR calculator.
  2. Live internet connection to access the eGFR web page.

2.0 Instructions for use

  1. Launch your web browser from a PC which has a live internet connection.
  2. Type the address to access the online eGFR calculator. A web page as shown in Figure1 will be presented.

    Figure 1

  3. Enter the serum Creatinine value of the patient in micro moles per litre (µmol/L) to the first text box. If you have the serum Creatinine value in milligrams per decilitres ( mg/dL), click on the blue colour link (“here”) which is in the bottom line of text. This will take you to another web page (Figure 2) which has facility to convert from mg/dL to µmol/L. Once you are in this page, If you enter the Creatinine value in mg/dL to the text box in the bottom next to the ‘Convert’ button, and press ‘Convert’, the value will get converted to the standard UK unit (µmol/L) and automatically get inserted to the first text box.

  4. Enter the patient’s age in years to the second text box.
  5. Select the patient’s gender and ethnicity using the two groups of radio buttons.
  6. Once all the necessary fields are specified in the form, click on the ‘Calculate’ button. This will give you the calculated eGFR value in the eGFR text box (Figure 3).

  7. The valid values for serum Creatinine is a numeric between 30µmol/L and 1500µmol/L. Pressing the ‘Calculate’ button after entering an invalid Creatinine value will trigger an error message (Figure 4).

  8. The valid value for age is a numeric between 18 years and 110 years. Pressing the ‘Calculate’ button after entering an invalid age value will trigger an error message (Figure 5).

  9. Pressing the ‘OK’ button on the alert message will erase only the invalid values entered to the text boxes and prepares the form to accept new values for a calculation.
  10. Use the set of links provided in the bottom of the calculator and in the ‘CKD links page’ ( to obtain more specific information about the CKD guidelines and other related resources.
